Dear HIV-APCoP members,
We are pleased to share with you the Summary of E-discussion on Key Affected Women and Girls in Asia and the Pacific, conducted on the Asia Pacific Community of Practice on HIV, Gender, and Human Rights (HIV-APCoP) in partnership with UNZIP the Lips! from 1 to 23 February 2012.
While governments of the region have committed through the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS “to comprehensively target key affected populations in national prevention strategies and ensure services are accessible to them”, the specific needs of women and girls have often been neglected, and punitive laws, policies, practices and stigma and discrimination continue to exist. This e-discussion, which coincided with the UNESCAP Asia-Pacific High-level Intergovernmental Meeting on the Assessment of Progress against Commitments in the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS and the MDGs, 6-8 February in Bangkok, succeeded in stimulating dialogue to ensure that proper policy attention is being paid to key affected women and girls. CoP members from UN agencies, governments and CSOs from the region contributed to the discussion, assisting in clarifying who specifically key affected women and girls are, and what priority actions should be undertaken by governments and civil society in order to achieve the 10 targets of the Political Declaration.
